“The Difficulty of the Easy – Lilit Grigoryan’s Debut Album ‘Sonata Facile’”
With her debut album “Sonata Facile,” pianist Lilit Grigoryan presents a fascinating collection of sonatinas and “easy” sonatas. But the title is deceptive: the six works by composers such as Mozart, Ravel, Beethoven, and Medtner prove to be musically profound and technically demanding.
“What is easy, what is difficult?” asks Grigoryan, emphasizing that the art lies in shaping even a few notes with expression, virtuosity, and technical sophistication. Her album takes a fresh look at the sonatina – an often underrated format that offers both beauty and musical complexity in a compact form.
With her recording, Grigoryan aims to pay tribute to the sonatina genre and invites her listeners on a journey through works that, despite their brevity, unfold an immense wealth of expression – from Medtner’s lyrical “Idyll” to Ravel’s virtuosic and musically multi-layered sonatina. Grigoryan’s playing sheds new light on these often overlooked masterpieces and shows that less is sometimes more – and often all the more difficult.
“Sonata Facile” will be released in February 2025 by Berlin Classics and promises to delight audiences with its blend of lightness and depth.
