Not every day on the agenda – Romantic Piano Concertos

With her fifth album, for the first time pianist Luisa Imorde releases an orchestral recording. Here she continues a certain tradition: After juxtapositions of Robert Schumann & Jörg Widmann (2016), Mozart – Woelfl – Beethoven (2019), Bach & Kapustin on the album “Moon Rainbow” (2020) and Couperin & Messiaen (2022), an album with music by Clara Schumann & Carl Maria von Weber now follows on 19.05.23. The key compositions are the only piano concerto by Clara Schumann, op. 7, and the 1st piano concerto in C major, op. 11 by Carl Maria von Weber. Under the grandiose direction of Marie Jacquot, she will be accompanied by the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra. Between the piano concertos, Imorde presents works for solo piano. She plays three pieces by Clara Schumann from the cycle “Myrten”, op. 25, as well as two pieces from the Liederkreis, op. 39. In addition, she performs three miniatures by Weber, as well as the Adagio patetico, which is attributed to Weber, but experts are devided on that matter.
As on the previous albums, Luisa Imorde manages to create a dialogue between the two composers. “Clara had chosen 30 songs by Robert, which she reworked for solo piano so that she could play them alone and enjoy them,” the pianist tells us in the booklet accompanying this recording. “I find this gesture incredibly touching,” she adds. Such touching gestures can also be found in Weber: “Weber wrote the “Max Waltz” for his son Max Maria. In addition, a “Favourite Waltz” for the Empress of France has been included in the selection; it gives a glimpse into Weber’s personality. The “12 Allemandes” op. 4 (WeV p.1) were also dedicated to a woman. They are, like Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto, a youthful work,” according to the detailed description of the concept. “Both piano concertos are united by an unmistakable dance-like characteristic. Funnily enough, both Carl Maria von Weber and Clara Schumann composed the first movement last,” Luisa Imorde also reports. But it all started much more simple: “The origin of this album was simply my search for lesser-known piano concertos. And these include those by Clara Schumann and Carl Maria von Weber. Everything else came from that.”
Imorde has a sure hand not only in compiling the repertoire, but also in choosing her musical partners. The Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra, a seasoned, well-rehearsed team, gave her the necessary backing, and conductor Marie Jacquot, who has since become a star conductor in demand worldwide, led all the musicians with a sure hand into the necessary romantic realms. Musically as well as technically, the works prove to be highly demanding. “If you want to know pianistically what a master Clara Schumann was at the piano, you absolutely have to have played this piano concerto!” admits Luisa Imorde. In the end, this album is a great listening pleasure, with many a surprise.
