Saint-Saëns’ concert art rediscovered – The second album in the “Complete Concertos” series
The second album in the New Talents Edition “Complete Concertos” by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns opens another fascinating chapter in the musical treasure hunt. Following the great success of the first album, which was recorded with violinist Leia Zhu and the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Howard Griffiths and will receive the OPUS Klassik award in October, the Orpheum Foundation is continuing its ambitious project: the complete edition of all of Saint-Saëns’ concert works—an undertaking that sheds new light on the diversity and inventiveness of this composer.
Like the first album, the new album in the series will be released on October 31, 2025, by Berlin Classics, underscoring the continuity and high standards of this extraordinary edition. Saint-Saëns’ concert pieces are much more than mere virtuoso displays. They are elegant, melodious, and original works that put the soloists in the spotlight without allowing them to remain stuck in empty virtuoso flourishes. Saint-Saëns succeeds in imaginatively breaking with tradition and creating new musical dialogues between soloist and orchestra. This CD series, made possible by the Swiss Orpheum Foundation and the Eppur si muove Foundation, brings together young, internationally outstanding soloists with the renowned ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the experienced conductor Howard Griffiths – a musical alliance that has stood for the highest quality and inspiring collaboration for years.
Three promising artists whose careers are already attracting attention on international stages were selected for the second album: Jae Hong Park, who interprets one of Saint-Saëns’ most popular works, the Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22; Lionel Martin, who explores the Suite for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 16b with poetic depth, and Ben Goldscheider, who brings rarely heard gems to life with the concert pieces for horn, including the Romances, Op. 36 and Op. 67, and the Morceau de concert, Op. 94.
