Some dreams last a long time – and sometimes a piece stays with you for half your life without you ever playing it yourself. For Asya Fateyeva, Eckart Runge and Andreas Borregaard, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations have always been such a guiding star. A piece they loved, admired and listened to – but which seemed to lie beyond their reach. For none of them plays the instrument for which it was written. Bach had composed the variations for a two-manual harpsichord; later, they became the supreme discipline of the piano. But how could this polyphonic monument be possible on the saxophone, cello or accordion – instruments some of which were not even invented until long after Bach’s death?
And so, in this instrumentation, the Goldberg Variations appear like familiar landscapes in an unfamiliar light. Well-known, yet never heard quite like this before. An endless process, as Asya Fateyeva says – one that does not stop once the recording is finished, but continues to have an effect. For some musical dreams do not merely last a long time. Sometimes they come true – and only then do they truly begin to shine.
