“Viatore” – In the Footsteps of Home, Nature, and Spirituality

Iveta Apkalna’s new album will be released on February 13, 2026, by Berlin Classics, marking her fifth recording for the label. It is her most personal project to date: a musical encounter with the kindred spirits of her art and the history of her homeland.

At the heart of the album is the music of Pēteris Vasks, with whom Apkalna shares a deep artistic and personal bond. Shaped by the experiences of the “Singing Revolution,” the program reflects a longing for freedom, truth, and cultural identity. Vasks’ Te Deum, composed as an expression of gratitude for Latvia’s regained independence, combines spiritual depth with elements of Latvian folk music.

Another milestone is Viatore, the work that played a decisive role in Apkalna’s career and now reappears in a mature, more contemplative interpretation. The program is complemented by works by Arvo Pärt, whose reduced, meditative style represents for Apkalna a process of inner transformation and spiritual searching.

Recorded deliberately in a concert hall rather than a sacred space, the album focuses on clarity, stillness, and the music’s inner resonance—creating a space for memory, prayer, and connection.
